Chapter 13

The Lift.

As she packed up her desk on Friday night, Abby was aware that she was moving deliberately slowly.

She didn't want to leave work, she realised. What would she do when she got home? She had no plans. Normally she'd be heading to Patrick's flat, but he was still in the midst of treating her to one of his stone-cold silences. This one had been going on since Tuesday, and was the result of her refusal to attend the pub quiz that evening. She had been unable to give any reason than that she really didn’t feel like it, and to Patrick this was an unacceptable reason to bail on plans. I'm a busy man, Abby, you know this, he had texted her angrily when he had arrived at the pub without her. I don't appreciate plans changing, especially for no good reason.

It's a fucking pub quiz, get over yourself.

She had typed it, then deleted it, rolling her eyes as she instead apologised for bailing, but pointed out that they didn't always have to do exactly what they had planned, and that she wouldn't mind if he bailed on her for casual plans at the pub. It wasn't, she had added, like she had missed a dinner someone had cooked, or a birthday party. The quiz was a weekly occurrence, and she could easily go next time. He hadn't replied to that, hadn't answered her calls, and that had been three days ago. In that time, she had come to a realisation that they were definitely over. She wasn't going to kid herself any longer that Patrick might be right for her. But how on earth was she meant to tell him that when he wouldn't answer her calls?

She put her coat on, then stood still for a moment, her hands still clutching the lapels, staring blankly at her desk. The idea of going home to an empty flat, with no weekend plans other that trying to break up with her stoic, furious boyfriend, was thoroughly unappetising. She was also well aware that if she did go home alone, she would end up doing the same thing she had done every night for the last few weeks: sitting alone in her bedroom drinking wine and thinking about what an utter screw up she was. How she had missed her chance, ruined everything, denied what was right in front of her face. How, even now, she was still fucking everything up; how she was going out of her way to avoid the only man she had ever loved.

She glanced over at Jake's desk, her heart clenching with both relief and sadness when she saw it empty. She hadn't spoken to him in weeks. The last time was the day they had gone to the park, cleared the air, promised each other everything was going to be alright. What a lie. Nothing was alright. And Abby knew she was to blame.

Jake had tried. He had tentatively reached out, more than once. He had sent her friendly emails, invited her for lunch, for coffee.
